MEMORIES I remember Miss Alice Crombie who 'ran' the home in Cromwell Road whilst I was there - 1962-1965. A real 'tartar' and strict disciplinarian, always ready to deliver a quick clip around the face, or tug the most sensitive parts of the hair. I remember Glenn, her black Labrador who we had the responsibility for for feeding, grooming and walking - bonus with the walking though as it gave us girls the opportunity to get out in the evenings and chat to BOYS!! I remember square necked dresses with paper nylon petticoats underneath to make them stick out, we had to wear 'nylons' with these dresses, kept up with sussies! I remember wearing 'Beatle' suits ( a rounded neckline to the jacket with no collar), and mini skirts. Miss Crombie bucked tradition, and St. Mary's Bay, and insisted on taking us on bespoke holidays each year, Blackpool in a boarding house, Grange-over-Sands in revamped railway carriages, great fun, and very innovative for a children's home in the 1960's. I remember running away with another inmate, for 3 days, to Llandudno - and being brought home in a police car, and Miss Crombie waiting for us at the front door - and me and ????!!! were both wearing make up, lipstick, foundation, eyeliner, mascara, the lot!! Miss C was horrified and made us wash it off straight away. One thing I really enjoyed was November 5th, Bonfire night, when us kids at Cromwell Road went to the other home in Charles Street for a big bonfire and firework party - happy days. When I left school in 1964 I went to work in AEI in the typing pool, still living at Cromwell Road, but I was allowed 12/6d a week pocket money - unheard of amounts for that time. Julie Mills 1962-66
